In Chinatown, public celebrations were important ways to build community. Chinatown festivities, which often included lion and dragon dancing, also helped attract and forge ties and understanding with non-Chinese communities in Vancouver. One important event, the Chinese New Year parade has, for generations, attracted tens of thousands of people of all ages and cultural backgrounds to these streets. The parade is still a major Chinatown attraction.
