Service in WWII and Winning the Vote

2

When WWII erupted in 1939, younger Chinese wanted to volunteer to fight for Canada, despite the fact they were not considered citizens. When they tried to enlist, however, most were rejected simply because of their race. Only when Japan entered the war were Chinese seen as useful soldiers. Eventually, they fought and died in every theatre of war and in every branch of the military. In 1947, two years after the war ended, their loyalty was rewarded: Chinese were finally granted full Canadian citizenship and the right to vote..
