First Chinese Canadian Elected to Parliament

2
Douglas Jung was born in Victoria in 1924. It was a time when Canada had shut its doors to Chinese immigration, and denied equal rights to Chinese living here. Jung believed he could help overturn these discriminatory policies if he volunteered to fight for Canada in WWII. It worked: two years after the war, in 1947, Chinese Canadians were finally granted full citizenship, including the right to vote and to hold public office. In 1957, Jung became the first person of Chinese descent to be elected to Parliament. He served two terms.
